What is a "hot throw," and why is my wick "mushrooming"? Sometimes, candle-making vocabulary can sound like a secret code!

So, as fellow candle-lovers, we are here to demystify the most common candle jargon, and help you make the most of your wax delights:)

Cold Throw: The Sneaky Sniff Test

The Cold Throw is simply the amount of fragrance a candle gives off when it is unlit and at room temperature.

Why it matters: This is your first impression! If the cold throw is weak, the candle may not deliver enough scent when lit. At Island Essence, we ensure a strong cold throw so you know exactly what you’re bringing home.

Wax Blend: The Recipe for Success

This refers to the primary materials the candle is made from. While some brands use paraffin wax, premium brands choose natural alternatives.

Our favourite blend: At Island Essence, we rely exclusively on natural soy wax. It’s clean, sustainable, and burns slower and cooler than traditional wax, making your purchase last longer.

The Burning Questions: Jargon in Action

These terms come into play once the wick is lit and the fragrance magic begins.

Hot Throw: When the Magic Happens

The Hot Throw is the true measure of a candle's power—it’s the amount of fragrance the candle emits while it is actively burning.

The Cold Throw is the candle's polite introduction. The Hot Throw is when your candle goes all out and fills the room! A good hot throw pervades your home.

Wax Pool: The Secret to Strong Scent

The Wax Pool is the liquid layer of melted wax that forms across the top of the candle.

Why it matters: For a great hot throw, you need a full wax pool! On the very first burn, let the candle melt all the way to the edges of the jar (usually 2-3 hours). This sets the candle's memory and ensures you get the utmost fragrance release on later burns.

The Troubleshooting Dictionary

When things go wrong, these are the terms you need to diagnose and fix the problem for a perfect flame.

Tunneling: The Candle Conspiracy

Tunneling occurs when the candle wick burns straight down the centre. This process leaves a hard ring of unmelted wax around the jar’s edge. It looks like the wax is trying to escape by digging a hole!

The Fix: Tunneling is usually caused by not allowing that first burn to create a full wax pool. If it happens, you can often save the candle by lighting it. Wrap a small piece of tin foil around the rim. This traps the heat gently and melts the stubborn sides.

Mushrooming: Give Your Wick a Wee Trim

Mushrooming is the term for when a little carbon ball forms on the tip of the wick after burning.

The Fix: This is natural, but don't let it happen! If you don't trim this carbon cap, the flame gets too big and smoky, leading to soot (and sometimes tunnelling). Always trim your wick to around 5mm (or 1/4 inch) before every single burn.
